Rev. Dr. T. Vaughn Walker, PhD, 68, passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019. Since 1984 he has served as Pastor of First Gethsemane Baptist Church. He was elected the first African-American tenured professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he began teaching in 1986. Survivors include his wife, Dr. Cheryl D. Walker; children, David Walker (DeeAnna), Mary Walker, and Eryn Griffin (Dominic); brothers, Wilber Don Walker (Linda) of Ft. Washington, MD, and Edwin Walker; six grandchildren; and granddog, Missy. Visitation will be on Friday, February 1, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church, 1159 Algonquin Parkway, where friends may visit the family after 5 p.m. Dr. Walker will lie in state at the Alumni Memorial Chapel of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2827 Lexington Road, on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the funeral service begins at 12 noon. Interment will follow at Cave Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are requested to First Gethsemane Baptist Church for the Dr. T. Vaughn Walker Scholarship Fund.
