Richard A. Darden, 76, passed away on October 11, 2025. Services will be Saturday, October 25, 2025 beginning with visitation at 10 am and funeral service to follow at 12 noon at St. Stephen Baptist Church, 1018 S. 15th Street. Interment will be in Green Meadows Cemetery.

Richard was born to the late Charles Darden and Dorothy Thomas. He grew up in St. Stephen Church under the leadership of Rev. B. J. Miller Sr. He was a proud member of the Angelic Choir and attended services regularly as a child alongside his family, the Pinkstons. His early faith and church upbringing helped shape the foundation of his life—rooted in love, humility, and strength of character. He enjoyed seeing childhood friends when attending church to see his grandchildren participate in youth ministries.

A proud graduate of Shawnee High School, Richard was a gifted three-sport athlete who excelled in football, basketball, and track and field. His outstanding athletic ability earned him the high jump record, which he held for many years. His dedication, determination, and quiet confidence reflected who he was both on and off the field.  Richard had a strong work ethic; his motto was “Be Early Not On Time”. He worked at Brown & Williamson, Bremner, and later retired from Clariant. He had a laid-back, easygoing spirit that made everyone around him feel at ease. His cool demeanor, warm heart, and signature style—especially his love for Adidas, jazz, and sports—made him unforgettable to all who knew him.

Richard’s greatest joy was his family. He is remembered with love by his wife Judith Darden, and daughters, Tamara Darden and Angela Darden. He was a proud grandfather to Alexis Darden and Xavier Gray, and he treasured every moment spent watching them grow. He also leaves behind his loving siblings: Charlotte Ridley, Terry Thomas (Judith), Denise Clayton, Kip Thomas, Sheila Marzette, Ronald Darden (Consaundra), Terry Darden (Marleen), Jeanette Brooks and Frances Garrett; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and Dear friend Bernita Green and her grandson Malick Dabo.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dorothy Thomas and Charles Darden; stepmother, Ophelia Darden and stepfather James Thomas; siblings, Kenneth Darden, Donald Darden, Ernest Whaley, and Everette Darden; and his beloved aunt, Gladys Darden, who helped raise him with love and care.

Richard will be remembered for his gentle spirit, unwavering love for family, and timeless coolness. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
